Message From the Brand
The seeds of the Wafu story were planted when Mari Toyoda, a trained Japanese chef, left home and immigrated to Canada. In Montréal, she quickly had her own successful sushi restaurant, serving authentic Japanese recipes. However, something was missing. Mari realized she needed the sesame dressing she grew up loving. Something smooth, creamy, and with the unmistakable nutty Japanese flavor to pair with her dishes. She got to work in her kitchen and created our first Wafu dressing, Original Sesame. Though our company has grown over the years, our mission remains the same: we want to bring the authentic flavors of Japan to the world!

Our dressings and mayos are a unique blend of authenticity and simplicity. We have a diverse selection of versatile dressings and mayos, sure to complement every meal. Wafu was founded with the goal of bringing fresh Japanese flavors to kitchens everywhere, and we proudly continue that tradition today. Our dressings and mayos can be either the final touch to a traditional Japanese dish, or an exciting addition to any new and unique meal.
Ginger Carrot
- Ginger has long been a vital aspect of Japanese cuisine. In fact, the use of ginger in Japan predates recorded history! Ginger is traditionally used as a “yang” ingredient to achieve harmonious cuisine, and our dressing continues that storied tradition. Our light, refreshing, and zesty Ginger Carrot dressing is the perfect complement to a beloved Japanese dish, or an exciting addition to any new and unique meal.
Wafu Means Japanese-Style
The name Wafu translates to “Japanese style,” and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Like our founder, our sauces emigrated from Japan to North America. Mari learned to cook in her parents’ restaurant in Tokyo, and when she opened her own restaurant in Montréal, she wanted the sauces she grew up loving. Our sauces are made from authentic Japanese flavors, like sesame and ginger, rooted in tradition, from our table to yours.
Tastes Like Victory
Wafu brings home the gold. In 2001, we burst onto the scene with our Original Sesame dressing. As a result, we were named the Winner in the Canadian Grand Prix New Product Awards. In 2008 and 2009 we were named finalists after the launch of our Ginger Carrot and Wasabi Edamame dressings. Our Gluten-Free Ginger Carrot dressing was also named a finalist in 2012. Then, in 2013 we were back on top after being named a finalist again with the launch of our newest sauce, Mayonaizu.
